While in the Cayman Islands for Natalie’s wedding, we decided to hop a plane to Cuba. We were only 45 minutes away, how could we not! I am really glad that we got to see Cuba before the embargo is lifted, and before there is a Starbucks on every corner. We stayed at the home of a woman named Mary, she rents out rooms in her home to tourists, and she is just the sweetest lady! Here are a few pictures of her lovely home, and the room where we stayed.
If you are planning a trip to Cuba, I highly recommend staying with Mary – here is her website. Although her website is in Spanish, she speaks perfect English, just email her. She even arranged for us to have dinner at her son and daughter-in-law’s home one evening so we could experience authentic home cooked Cuban food. It was so fun to get to know all of the family and take a peek into the life of the average Cuban person.
Before going to Cuba, I had just finished reading the biography of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevera, and it was fascinating to see the very places that had been described in my book, and to have a pretty good grasp on the history of that time period. It is easy to imagine Cuba in it’s prime…the Las Vegas before there was a Las Vegas. And it was very educationally edifying to speak with other travelers and citizens about the current political and economical status of the country and the impact the United States has had on it.
We were only able to spend 3 days in Cuba, but so far it has been one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had. I did manage to take quite a few pictures of doors to add to my collection, as well as bring home an old Cuban cigar box from 1929! I am already looking forward to going back some day.
